The first digital camera sensor (CCD, charged-coupled device) was invented at Bell Labs in year 1969. Early uses of digital sensors werely mainly on military and scientific. It was until the 2000s that the fast-evolving CMOS
sensor , with
its cost effectiveness,
began to overtake CCD and successfully popularized digital imaging to all aspects of our lives.
Microscopy industry benefitted from the
revolutionary development
of digital camera sensor over the last two decades. Besides having higher live view speed and higher sensitivity, digital sensor is integrated into microscopy system to provide auto focus and 3D surface functions these days.
Did you know?
Optical microscope (OM) uses photon (light), has a resolution limit of 200 nm (max around 1000x-2000x), offers quick and easy observation even on living specimen with colour information.
Electron microscope (EM) manages to observe in mega magnification and sub-nano resolution. However, the process is slower and costlier due to the destructive preparation. Higher depth of field image can be achieved using its electron beam though only rendered in greyscale.

There are four types of microscope cameras based on its applications:
> USB camera
- connect to computer, usually pairs with image analyser.
> HDMI camera
- connect directly to screen with basic inspection function.
> Auto Focus camera
- capable of auto focusing live view image (HDMI/USB).
> 3D camera
- Standalone camera system with 3D profiling function.
